I love the quote, “Not all those who wander are lost.” Not just because it comes from Lord of the Rings (nerd), but it’s for those that wander for enlightenment. Some of us did not have the luxury of wandering earlier in life; we had to have life figured out earlier. Not to wander in just the sense of travel, but to figure out themselves and find their place in life. A chance to explore new experiences, community, and a higher sense of awareness about the world.
In 2009, after reading a Francis Ray novel, I booked my first solo trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico (and my first flight!). Santa Fe is one of my favorite cities: the history, art, and Canyon Road. Even the color of the sky was a different shade of blue. What resonated with me the most about the city is how the Native American culture grew to other generations despite colonization and other tragedies. Traditions were passed on and roots firmly planted. As a Black Woman in America, I often wonder what my ancestors’ original languages, countries, and cultures were. What coming of age or rights of passage did they face. Did they have the privilege to wander in their native homelands? That trip woke up something in me that wanted to build a stronger foundation to “wander.” What more could I do with this life I was given? What more could I learn?
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Earlier last week, it occurred to me that I’m wandering into a new phase of life. To quote a friend, “I am my most authentic self.” I am more stable and grounded in who I am as a woman that I can put myself more out into the universe to receive that same energy. Without the grind, I have clarity on what I would like to do and experience during this half of my life. Still struggling with anxiety over things I can not control, but slowly getting there. In observing my family and friends, everyone is in an “ok” spot. Everything is not perfect due to the pandemic by any means, but everyone is realizing new talents, pursuing dreams, and opening businesses. They now have the time to focus and wander.
Join us this month as we discuss To Wander. Tell us about your wandering. Is it travel, experiences, relationships, or life overall? We millennials believe in safe places.
